On January 27, 2026, Archie Duane Young passed away after a brief illness in St. Augustine, Florida, at the Clyde E. Lassen State Veterans Nursing Home.
Archie was the youngest child born to Cary Washington Young and Myrtle Marvall (Porter) Young and was born in Escambia County, Florida on July 31, 1945.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Carey W. Young and Quinon L. Young; his step-father, Henry Knotts; and by his wife, Sharon Ann (Wiggins) Young who passed away from cancer two years ago on February 16, 2024.
Archie is survived by his three children and their families:
* Kimberly (Greg) Doss, of Tallahassee, Florida, and family (Rachel Doss, Sarah Doss, Hannah Doss, and Rachel’s son, Calvin Brock.)
* Pamela (Jim) Homyak of Pensacola, Florida, and family (Travis Walsh and Allison Walsh.)
* Shannon (Carola “Pia”) Duane Young, of West Lafayette, Indiana; and family (Joel (Stefany) Mendoza, Emma Young, Nicolas Potes, Lucas Young, and Sofia Young.)
Archie served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam war and earned an Honorable Discharge with the rank E-4. He served in the military air police as a K-9 handler. Like so many others, Archie had a hard time finding gainful employment upon his return from the war. He was fortunate to get hired by the local railroad (L&N/Seaboard Systems/CSX), which provided him the opportunity to give his children the best start in life that he was able. Archie worked as a dedicated railroad conductor for 34 years, known by his crew buddies as “Brown Eyes,” among other things.
A memorial service celebrating Archie’s life will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 2026, at the Barrancas National cemetery at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. The service will be outside with limited seating under a pavilion.
The family welcomes donations to either the humane society or local veteran’s groups.
