She was recognized for her endeavors, twice winning the Hillsborough County Hispanic Woman of the Year Award and serving as a founding member on the board of the Mary and Martha House, to support abused and homeless women and children. Carmen would go on to retire from Hillsborough County in December of 2000, after more than 20 years of service. In her retirement, Carmen moved to Newberry, Florida and then, Jacksonville, Florida to be closer to her family. She enjoyed traveling, visiting family and friends, eating good Cuban food, and spoiling her two grandchildren.
