Dr. S. Zafar Hasan, our dear father, grandfather, and husband, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family at 1.10 pm EST on March 2, 2018.

Dr. Hasan, Dean Emeritus, College of Social Work, University of Kentucky, received his Doctor of Social Welfare at Columbia University in 1958.  He returned to his home of Lucknow, India where he rose to full Professor and Head of the Department of Social Work at Lucknow University.  Under his leadership, Lucknow University initiated India's first Ph.D. program in Social Work.

Dr. Hasan was then recruited as full Professor at the University of Kentucky in 1970 and went on to serve as Dean of the College of Social Work for almost 20 years.  He was a pioneer in social work, master teacher, tireless academician, and kind mentor to countless students and teachers.

Dr. Hasan was a loving father and husband who with his wife of 56 years, Nuzhat Hasan, successfully raised four children. He always stressed the importance of education with three of his children going on to become physicians and one child an attorney.

Our beloved patriarch always saw the goodness and humanity in people. He was learned and brilliant, yet maintained a humble and gracious nature.

He is survived by his wife, Nuzhat, his four children, Shirin, Simin, Akbar and Jafar along with their respective spouses, Don, Sajid, Farhana, and Afira, and most importantly his nine lovely grandchildren, Zahid, Aamir, Aliya, Safia, Azeem, Aidin, Aisha, Abid, and Zoya.

He rests in peace in Jacksonville, Florida. May his eternal journey be as glorious and graceful as he beautifully embodied in life and may God bless him and all his family.

In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to the University of Kentucky College of Social Work.
