Jettie B. Johnston, age 87, passed away suddenly on November 9, 2023.  She was the loving wife of Dr. Thomas S. Johnston, and devoted mother of Jettie J. Hearne, Julia J. Umberger, and Thomas S. Johnston, Jr. (deceased).

Remembered for her charm and wit, lovely clothes, enthusiasm and compassion, Jettie will be sorely missed by her family and many friends throughout the world, especially at Cypress Village.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Jettie was educated at The Ellis School in Pittsburgh, PA, Mary Baldwin College, Staunton, VA, and Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, graduating in 1958, with a B.A. degree in English. Jettie was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity at Dickinson College. Jettie taught 5th and 8th grade school in New Jersey.

Jettie and Tom lived San Francisco, CA, San Antonio, TX, and Berlin, Germany, during the period in which the wall was constructed.  After returning to the USA, they settled in the Philadelphia, PA, area.  Jettie was a member of the Junior League, on the Board of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and a member of the Acorn Club there.

Jettie was very active raising her children, and thoroughbred horses.

On retirement, Jettie and Tom moved to The Landings in Savannah, GA.  She was a member of St. John’s Church, and the Women’s Board of the Bethesda Academy there.

Twenty-five years later, she and Tom moved to Cypress Village Retirement Community, in Jacksonville FL.

Jettie was predeceased by her parents, Paul and Jettie Bergman and her son, Thomas S. Johnston, Jr.  She is survived by her husband, Thomas S. Johnston; daughters, Jettie J. Hearne (Darrell) of Savannah, GA, and Julia J. Umberger (Max) of Chester Springs, PA, Paul J. Bergman (Judy) of Pittsburgh, PA; daughter-in-law, Wendy L. Johnston of Jacksonville, FL, and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Cypress Village Retirement Community, in Egret Hall, at 4600 Middleton Park Circle East, Jacksonville FL, on November 28, 2023, at 2:30 PM.
