Joan Orensky (née Sachs), age 90, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida, the city where she was born and spent much of her life.
Born on May 8, 1935, in Jacksonville to Harry and Ida Sachs, Joan grew up in a close-knit family alongside her sisters Katie, Fay, and Lois, and brothers Bernard and Ira. She carried the warmth of her upbringing throughout her life, cherishing family traditions and creating a home filled with love and beauty.
Joan pursued higher education with determination and grace. She earned a degree in Journalism from the University of Florida before going on to complete a Master’s in Education from Rutgers University. Her academic achievements reflected her lifelong love of learning and communication.
Joan shared a devoted marriage with her husband Jack for 69 years, building a life together centered around family, tradition, and joy. She was a loving mother to Todd and Sheryl, and a proud grandmother to Lexi, Sarah, and Erica. Her family was the heart of her world, and she delighted in celebrating Jewish traditions surrounded by those she loved most.
A woman of vibrant spirit and impeccable style, Joan had an eye for beauty that touched every aspect of her life. She adored decorating her home and tending to her garden with care. Her passion for fashion was legendary—her wardrobe boasted outfits with matching shoes in every color imaginable. Shopping was not just a pastime but a joyful expression of her personality.
Joan also found great pleasure in cooking and baking. Many of her favorite recipes were lovingly passed down from her mother, continuing cherished culinary traditions that brought comfort and connection to generations.
In addition to her creative pursuits at home, Joan enjoyed games that brought people together. She loved playing Bridge, Mah Jongg, and Canasta—activities that combined strategy with social connection.
Joan was deeply loved by many and will be missed dearly by all who knew her. Her legacy lives on through the memories she created with family and friends—the laughter around the card table, the aroma of something sweet baking in the oven, the sparkle of a perfectly chosen outfit—and most importantly, through the love she gave so freely.
