Retired U.S. Army Major John E. Skinner, passed away on June 2, 2024, due to various health issues that ultimately led to heart failure.
John, who was born in Birmingham, AL on July 10, 1947, spent over 24 years serving his country: two tours in Vietnam, then in the Gulf War and Provide Comfort (in Turkey), among others. His military service affected and forever changed his life, and we are grateful that he can now find peace.
His Medals include: Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service, Meritorious Service, Joint Service of Commendation, Army Commendation, Army Good Conduct, National Defense Service, Humanitarian Service, Vietnam Service, Kuwait Liberation, Southwest Asia Service, Vietnam Campaign, Vietnam Staff Service, etc.
John’s military career as an Aviation, Tactical Intelligence Officer/Parachutist and later Strategic and Imagery Intelligence Officer was one that influenced him throughout his life and after he retired, he continued his military service indirectly by helping other Veterans in any way he could.
In general, John was someone who would help wherever he could. He had a very special (and endlessly huge) place in his heart for animals. A love and appreciation for music and movies accompanied him throughout his life and there are many fond memories surrounding this- whether dancing, singing or just enjoying listening together.
Some of his other great passions were golf, creating memories and connections through delicious meals with loved ones. Connecting with people was a special gift that John had; he could start a conversation with anyone, anywhere, and share stories, laughter and love with those he met, all over the world. He touched so many lives and his sense of humor and smile are already missed.
John is survived by his loving family: his wife, Brigitte, his daughter, Jeannette (Carsten), his son, John R., his grandchildren, Chloe and Jesper, his sister-in-law, Ruth Broughton and family and his stepbrothers Tim Mahan and Tom Mahan. He is predeceased by many beloved family members and pets that accompanied him in life and we know that he was welcomed by them and is enjoying their company as he continues to be with us in spirit.
John will be laid to rest with Military Honors, at Jacksonville National Cemetery on June 20, 2024 at 11:30am.
