In Loving Memory

Marian McClure (Elliott) Lockwood

March 29, 1938 – November 10, 2018

Marian McClure Lockwood, passed away peacefully at home in Wilmington, Delaware, after a long illness on November 10, 2018 at the age of 80.  She was born on March 29, 1938 in Lancaster, Kentucky to the late Francis Marian and Dorothy (Rich) Elliott.

Marian had a very happy childhood in the small town of Lancaster, enjoying adventures with her brother and cousins and relishing summer camp. Marian attended Christian College in Columbia, Missouri for two years before transferring to the University of Kentucky where she graduated with a degree in English in 1960.  She then took her first teaching position at Fort Knox, Kentucky where she met her future husband.  As the story goes, she told her friend that she was going to ‘marry that man’ upon seeing him out a window before ever meeting him!

After being married in 1962, the newlyweds relocated to Chicago where her husband was completing his MBA at Northwestern.  Marian taught English for several years in downtown Chicago and in the Elmhurst suburb.  Although she was definitely not a fan of the cold winters, she loved the Windy City and had a passion teaching English to her students.

After the birth of her children, Lynda and Doug, Marian became a stay at home mom and dedicated her life to creating a loving and nurturing home for her family.  Some of her fondest memories were supporting her children in their school and extracurricular activities, going on the family’s annual trips to the beach in Cape May, surprising Lynda with day off school for a "girls only" day trip to Washington DC, and fishing with Doug and his friends at Lum's Pond.  She also loved taking her dream trips to the Caribbean islands and a three-week trip Italy with her husband.  In her free time, Marian loved nothing more than being outside floating in the pool, reading and enjoying the sunshine.  She was so happy to have Amy join the family and becoming ‘Nana’ to her two precious granddaughters, Brooklyn (7) and Avery (3 ½), was one of her proudest moments and loving them was one of her greatest joys.

Marian is survived by her husband of 56 years, Chuck; her daughter Lynda Elizabeth Lockwood of Atlanta, Georgia; son Douglas Charles Lockwood, daughter-in-law Amy Lynn Lockwood, and two granddaughters Brooklyn Grace and Avery Lynn Lockwood of Jacksonville, Florida; and brother William Elliott of Lancaster, Kentucky.

The family is holding a private memorial service on Wednesday, November 21st, at the Ponte Vedra Valley Funeral Home in Ponte Vedra, Florida.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Seasons Hospice Foundation at seasonsfoundation.org/donate.
