The family of Michael Herman Cotton of Madison is saddened to announce his passing on August 20, 2023, at the age of 64. Michael was born in South Bend, Indiana, to David and Roseanne Cotton on December 29, 1958. He grew up in New Canaan, Connecticut. Michael graduated college from the University of Virginia in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. After graduating, he worked in the eyewear industry for over 30 years.

Along with his academic and work achievements, Michael was an elite athlete as a distance runner. He won the Connecticut cross country state open both his junior and senior year of high school, and was the third fastest cross country athlete in the country his senior year. His high school accomplishments led him to the University of Virginia where he received all American honors in the 10k and also obtained the school record in the 10k. After college, Michael continued his running success by winning multiple marathons and competing in the Olympic trials in the steeplechase.  

Michael is survived by his mother, Roseanne; sister, Cathy; brother, David; his children, David and Sarah; their mother, Ashley; and nephews, Alec, Adam and Dexter. Michael is preceded in death by his father, David Cotton; and brother, Christopher Cotton.
