Nancy J. Mavian, 80, of Ponte Vedra, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 20, 2023, with her children by her side. She was born October 2, 1943, in Staten Island, New York, the daughter of James and Myrtle (Christie) Butters. Nancy graduated from Port Richmond High School in Staten Island and went on to receive her Bachelor of Science in Education from SUNY Oswego University. On July 7, 1965, she married Garo E. Mavian. They enjoyed 45 years together raising their children and traveling before his passing on April 16, 2011.
Nancy was vibrant, fun, and beloved by those around her and will be remembered for her caring nature and playful sense of humor. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and enjoyed children of all ages. Nancy was a high school science teacher and developed close relationships with many of her students and coworkers. She was also an avid tennis player, and enjoyed traveling, spending time with friends, crafting, walking on the beach, reading, pulling weeds, rocks (geology) and butterflies. Her stenciling and handmade curtains in the family’s homes were works of art.
Nancy is survived by her daughter, Lauren Mavian of Livermore, Maine, her son, Greg Mavian of Austin, Texas, her sister Susan Dobson of Califon, New Jersey, her sisters-in-law, Seta Izmirly of Haworth, New Jersey, and Rita Butters of New Bern, North Carolina, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband and her brothers, John and James Butters.
