“If you are waiting on me, you’re backing up” is one of many Babcockisms that William Babcock, beloved husband, son, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend used to love to say. William (Bill) passed away in his sleep at the age of 84 on June 21st, 2023, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Born on November 17, 1938 in Columbia, South Carolina and later moved to the Hampton Roads, Virginia area, and graduated from Hampton High School. He began his career at Newport News Shipbuilding as a draftsman and then went on to begin his career with New York Life Insurance (NYL) Company as an insurance agent. After 37 years, he retired as Managing Partner of the NYL Northern Virginia office in Tysons Corner. During Bill’s tenure with NYL he received his bachelor and master’s degree. Bill deeply cared for his clients and gave back to the community through fundraisers, being a Jaycee member, and lifetime member of Shriners International and the Masons.
Bill, also lovingly called Billy Bad Boy, loved golf, art, music, dancing, great food, his sweet dog; and, all who knew him appreciated his sense of humor and infectious laugh, quick wit, generosity and loving spirit. He will be greatly missed by all. Per Bill’s wishes, there will not be a service but all are encouraged to donate to the Wounded Warrior Project and/or the Dementia Society of America.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Diane Hackler Babcock; his children: Debra Babcock, William Edward Babcock, Jr., Elizabeth Ann (Andreas) Hatzadakis, Marcus Daniel Babcock, Christopher Layton (Sara Langston) Kidman; brother-in-law, Daniel (Bonnie) Hackler; his six grandchildren: William (Susie Werner) Metts, Stephanie (Jonathan) Quintanilla, Christina (Jeff) Houser, Tara Erin (Ray) Williams, Michelle Rene Vazquez, Patricia Ann Babcock, Addison Marie Kidman and Ethan Hackler Kidman; and, ten great grandchildren. Bill is preceded in death by his father, Clarence Oval Babcock; his mother, Ruby Mae Avant; and, his grandson, Andreas Hatzadakis II.
